THE ROSE BOWL FAREWELL

I hiked into one of my all time favorite fishing holes the other day. It’s in Olympic National Park, on a glacial river, about three miles from the road.

Over the years, I have caught everything from burly Chinook to coho, large bull trout, whitefish and cutthroat in it. It’s primarily steelhead water, though, and I’ve taken winter and, especially, summer fish from it for more than 15 years.

November in the Olympics

Herman Melville didn’t think much of November, and it is definitely a time of transition for fly fishers on the Olympic Peninsula. You still have a shot at cutthroat in the rivers early in the month, but things are slowing down. Indeed, I had a couple of good fly fishers on the water the other day, and they didn’t touch a cutt all day on the Sol Duc and South Fork Calawah. The water was in the mid 40s on both rivers, and that certainly doesn’t help. I got a nice sea-run on the Queets the following day, but its water was in the 50s.
